Before Toto was formed The members of the band did sessions for other musicians. David Paich, the son of session drummer Marty Paich, and Jeff Porcaro (the brother of guitarist Joe Porcaro and drummer Jeff Porcaro) all played on Boz Scaggs’ 1975 album Silk Degrees. Toto was formed in 1976 following the collaboration.
Turn Back, Toto's third studio album was criticized by critics for the absence of hit singles. In 1985, lead singer Fergie Frederiksen resigned from the group The group held auditions for the new frontman. Guitarist Steve Lukather was chosen, and the group recorded their album Fahrenheit in 1986.
In 1998, Toto celebrated its 20th anniversary by scouring through demos and tapes from the past to release a special album called Toto XX. The album was a hit by fans and the band embarked on a tour that featured former members Bobby Kimball, Steve Porcaro and Joseph Williams.
Shem Von Schröck replaced Leland Sklar as the drummer during the tour for the 40 Trips Around the Sun album. In 2017, Toto released the double-CD set Falling in Between. It included recordings from the tour as well as an interview with the group.
